Finding Ground:

When Life Floods—Literally

After the storms that ripped through Michigan this week, I’ve never been more grateful for the basics: a dry basement, electricity, and a quiet moment to breathe.

Last night around 7:30pm, I came home to our basement drains backing up, over 200 gallons of water needing to be cleared, and a storm looming that had already flooded parts of our street. We were sprinting with a wet/dry vac, clearing debris from the storm drain, and riding on pure adrenaline. Oh—and lightning struck close enough that I caught it on camera while using my flash as a flashlight. Wild. (You’ll see the video at the end.)

But even in the chaos, one thing hit me: we can’t always control the storm, but we can control how we come back to center.

The Michigan Storms Reminded Me: Simplicity Heals

You don’t need an hour-long workout or the perfect environment to take care of your body and your mind.

If you’re someone in Grand Blanc, Fenton, Holly—or anywhere in Michigan—who’s felt shaken, drained, or disconnected lately… here’s your permission slip:

Go for a walk. Aim for 5,000 to 10,000 steps, not because your fitness tracker told you to—but because movement soothes your nervous system and restores clarity. Even just pacing around your house helps. Try 5 minutes of meditation before bed. No apps. No pressure. Just breathe. Set a timer, lie flat or sit tall, and let the day settle before your head hits the pillow.

These aren’t just “wellness hacks”—they’re foundational for nervous system regulation and long-term pain relief (especially if you’re working through hip stiffness or chronic tension from sitting).

This Is What Resilience Looks Like

It’s easy to post quotes about peace and gratitude—but harder to live them when water is rising in your yard and lightning is lighting up the sky.

Michigan weather reminded me that the best time to build habits is before you need them. The second-best time? Right now.

So whether you’re watching storms roll in, recovering from chaos, or just trying to feel better in your body—start small. Start now.

Your Homework Today:

Option A: Go for a walk. Indoors, outdoors, doesn’t matter. Move with intention. Option B: Sit down tonight, close your eyes, and just breathe for 5 minutes. That’s it.
