3 Easy Stretches Before Bed to Open Up Tight Hips (No Equipment Needed)

If your hips feel stiff after a long day or you tend to wake up achy, the best time to reset your body isn’t in the gym—it’s right before bed. These easy stretches before bed can help you unwind tension, boost circulation, and improve your hip mobility without needing a yoga mat, foam roller, or even much space.
The best part? You can do all of them right next to your bed in under 5 minutes.
1. Modified Couch Stretch (Foot Up on Bed)

If you sit for long periods or drive a lot, your hip flexors are likely shortened and tight. The couch stretch is one of the most effective ways to lengthen this area—but here we’re simplifying it.
How to do it:
Stand facing away from your bed Place the top of one foot on the edge of the bed Gently lower into a lunge-like position with your front foot planted Lean forward slightly while keeping your torso tall You’ll feel a stretch in the front of your back hip
Hold for 30 seconds per side. Breathe deeply.
This easy stretch before bed helps undo hours of sitting and prepares your hips to relax.
2. 90-90 Modified Standing Flow (Bedside Hip Opener)

This one hits internal and external rotation—the often-overlooked ranges of motion that affect walking, squatting, and even sleeping positions.
How to do it:
Stand beside your bed in a 90- position (front leg bent at 90°, back leg on ground ) Gently rotate your back hip inward (internal rotation), then outward (external rotation) with minimal effort Keep your spine tall and chest facing forward
Perform 8-10 controlled reps per side
This gentle movement lubricates the hip joint, activates stabilizers, and promotes better alignment.
3. Bedside Hip Airplane (Balance + Mobility in One)

This stretch gets bonus points because it challenges balance, core control, and hip mobility all in one go. It’s basically your bedtime mobility mic drop.
How to do it:
Stand beside your bed and place one hand lightly on the edge for balance Hinge at the hips, lowering your chest as one leg lifts behind you Once you’re in a T-position, slowly rotate your hips open, then closed Think of your pelvis as a bowl of water you’re gently tipping from side to side
Perform 5-6 rotations per leg
Great for improving hip stability and functional strength—even after a long day.
Why Stretch Before Bed?
Stretching before bed has been shown to:
Lower resting heart rate Reduce muscle tightness Improve sleep quality Support joint recovery overnight
And when it comes to hip health, a daily mobility routine—even one this short—can create massive long-term change.
Whether you’re a runner, a busy parent, a desk worker, or just tired of feeling tight and achy when you wake up—these 3 easy stretches before bed are your new nightly reset.
